Oregon
Beaverton
Star's Caberet and Steak House
4570 Sw Lombard Ave.
(503)-222-7827
These meaty, lightly breaded wings will make you break a sweat. They
have good bleu cheese and a good selection of imports and micro-brews.
But before you take the kids, read the comments. Gulliver
say's,"Stars Cabaret is, well, a place you go not to eat or drink,
but to LOOK! This is one of the best adult clubs in the whole NW.
The "views" are spectacular, and "close up" views are expensive.
Oh yeah, the wings: they RULE! They are some of the best I've had
in Oregon. They are big, with both wings and drumettes, and dripping
with a not-too-hot and very delicious sauce. Due to the low light,
it was hard to examine them closely. Besides, I was too busy looking
at other things, if you know what I mean! They had a texture which
implied a light coating of batter, but no batter taste. It may have
just been extra-crispy skin. Maybe someday I'll go back with a
flashlight. You get a choice of average blue cheese or ranch dip
and an acceptable amount of celery. They also have a full bar with
several imports and micro's on tap. Rumor has it they serve a good
steak as well." Are you sure it was the wings making you sweat?
Bend
Deschutes Brewery
1044 NW Bond St.

These medium sized, Buffalo style wings will make you break a sweat.
Great bleu cheese and micro brewed beer(real beer)! The Gulliver's
says,"Just as I was going to give up on Oregon, I found this Nirvana of
wings and beer! I have said before that in general, Oregon sucks for wings.
It does. But these tasted GREAT. They are hot enough for the average person
(I am crazy and eat straight habaneros, so I am not one to judge heat for
"normal" people) and taste GREAT. They are very close to Granite's in
Sacramento (which in turn is very close to the original Anchor Bar).
Pretty standard bleu cheese and plenty of carrots and celery. The beer here is wonderful.
Deschutes is the biggest of the Oregon micro-breweries, and their stuff is on tap in
almost every restaurant and bar in the state. At their home in Bend, you have the
advantage of getting beer in the original CASK! For those who are unfamiliar with this,
it is an order of magnitude fresher and richer than out of a keg (think how keg beer
compares to cans, then picture the same relationship between cask and keg). WOW!
The beer here is SOOOOOO much better than the same brews served via regular keg
in other establishments. They also have an enormous menu with food of all styles,
and a sports section with big screen. I never would have guessed such a Mecca would
exist out in Bend, which is a flyspeck town in the middle of nowhere, central Oregon.
We are talking 2 hours to the nearest town of 50,000 or more. This was by far the
biggest and best surprise of my trip to the countryside! I can say this is the best
place for wings I have yet found in this state, and among the best for beer." High
praise from a wing connoisseur. Good to hear from the great Northwest again.
A second review from the Farleys states,"You forgot to mention the
garlic on the wings, it makes them the best I have ever had, and I
have had a lot."
Eugene
Steelhead Brewery
199 E 5th Ave.
(541)-686-2739
These medium sized, Buffalo style wings have a spicy sauce and
good bleu cheese. They are a micro-brewery and that usually means
great beer. Gulliver says,"The wings here are just average restaurant
wings, but no one goes here for the wings. Steelhead is one of the
world's most renowned micro-breweries. Their freshly made beer is as
good as you can get. The menu has a lot of other good items. Their
pizza is some of the best outside Chicago. The ambiance is awesome:
like an English pub with an eclectic mix of decor. If in Eugene, or
in Oregon at all for that matter, you MUST stop here." Somebody has got
to improve the wings out west. If they had great wings to match
their beer, it would be paradise. Am I right?
Portland

BJ's
825 NE Weidler St
(503)-288-0111
These meaty, Buffalo style wings have a burn your lips sauce and
great bleu cheese. They have micro brews and lots of imports.
Gulliver says,"This is a newer chain micro-brewery and restaurant.
They have dozens of locations in the West, so see the website for a
complete list with maps. Everything about them (at least the two I
have seen in Portland in Eugene) is AWESOME. The beer is literally
the best I have EVER had. Everything on the menu is great, from great
clam chowder, to pizza, to ribs, to the wings. The wings are very
good, especially for the West. They meat is top quality, all
drumettes. The sauce is medium heat, but very flavorfull.
They cook them crispy but not burnt, and use enough sauce to
thoroughly cover without getting sloppy. I am impressed also by the
amount and quality of the fresh celery: no skimping here!
You can choose ranch or bleu cheese (if you don't speak up, you get
ranch): both taste like Restaurant Kraft, which is a good standard,
if not terribly exciting. When you go, order the Red Ale! It is
one of the very best beers ever made. They also have seasonal brews
which can be truly spectacular. Prices are very competitive
considering both the quality and QUANTITY of food. One note
of caution: the pizza comes standard with fresh tomatoes, so
if you are tomatophobic, ask to skip them!" Check out this web page.
I could fill my map with the locations they have.
Springfield
Spencer's Restaurant & Brewhouse
980 Kruse Way.
(541)-726-1726
These medium sized, Buffalo style wings have a spicy sauce and
great bleu cheese. They are a micro-brewery and that usually means
great beer. Gulliver says,"Eugene-Springfield is not known for wings.
However, it is known for BEER. Spencer's is one of many pubs which
brews and kegs its own beer. I chose to review Spencer's of all the
pubs because they are one of the few with edible wings (most wings in
this town SUCK) and because they have the best dip I have ever had!!!
It is not a true blue cheese, but a gorgonzola dip which is mild but
extremely smooth and flavorful. You will have to request extra celery
because they skimp on it. Go for the beer, and get the wings just for
the dip." The Northwest in general is sorely lacking in Buffalo
wing restaurants. Somebody with a little startup capital could change all of that.
Any ambitious entrepreneurs out there? They definitely have the beer.
Gulliver sends us an update."After getting complaints about the sauce being too hot, they now mix the
original sauce with BBQ sauce. The result is not good. The waitress
said next time I go back, I can request them "all hot" and get the
original. Be sure anyone who reads your web page knows this before
stopping in Springfield."Thanks for the tip.
